What should you know about t1a melanoma?

The T category describes the primary melanoma in the skin. The a category indicates a thin tumour without ulceration on the pathology report. This label does not by itself describe every aspect of a person’s outlook; lymph-node findings, examination, and other staging information may also matter. Melanoma can develop in an existing mole or on previously normal skin, so the removed tissue is examined closely.

A specialist may explain whether the edges of the specimen are clear and whether further tissue removal is needed. The term is part of a staging system, not a description of how a lesion looks from the outside.

Arrange a consultation with the clinician who reviewed the pathology. Between visits, report a new changing mole, a firm lump near the scar, or a new persistent skin lesion rather than waiting for the next routine review.

Ask: What did the pathology report show about thickness and ulceration? Are the margins clear? Do I need more surgery or a lymph-node assessment? How often should my skin and lymph nodes be checked? What changes around the scar should prompt a call?
