Systolic dysfunction heart failure explained

How the structures involved in Heart Failure differ from normal

Short answer

Systolic dysfunction heart failure is reduced contraction of a heart chamber, so less blood may be pumped forward with each beat.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How systolic dysfunction affects the body

The left ventricle usually provides the main force for sending oxygen-rich blood around the body. If its muscle is weakened or damaged, pressure may rise in the circulation behind it. This can lead to fluid in the lungs, reduced stamina and swelling in the feet or ankles. The word dysfunction describes performance; it does not by itself identify the cause or predict exactly how you will feel.

Some people have few symptoms early on. Others develop breathlessness during activity or when lying down, fatigue, cough or palpitations. Hypertension and atrial fibrillation are relevant conditions to mention during an assessment.

Living with the diagnosis

Your clinician may use an examination, an ECG, blood tests and an echocardiogram to understand pumping function and contributing problems. The care plan may include medicines, monitoring and advice about activity, salt, fluids or other health conditions; the details depend on your results.

Keep a record of breathlessness, ankle swelling, dizziness and how much activity you can manage. Take medicines consistently and check before using over-the-counter products, because some can affect fluid balance, blood pressure or kidney function. A chronic disease review provides a useful place to review the plan.

Warning signs

Call emergency services for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain or pressure, collapse, severe weakness, or blue-grey skin around the lips. Seek prompt clinical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, a new persistent cough, faintness or a clear drop in your usual ability to walk or climb stairs.

Useful questions

Ask what the term means in your case, whether the right or left side is affected, how your rhythm and blood pressure influence the plan, and which symptoms need urgent review. Ask when your next scan or medication review is due.

Questions people ask

Does systolic dysfunction always cause symptoms?

No. Symptoms vary with the degree of dysfunction, fluid levels, rhythm and activity, and some people are identified during an assessment for another reason.

Should I exercise with systolic dysfunction?

Ask your clinician for activity advice based on your symptoms and heart function; sudden strenuous exertion may not be appropriate while the plan is being established.
