Swollen upper lip with white spots

White-tipped spots on the skin may contain oil, keratin, or inflammatory material. A blocked pore, follicle irritation, or a pimple can become more noticeable when nearby tissue is swollen. Product irritation and perioral dermatitis may cause small bumps around the mouth, while rosacea can cause inflammatory facial changes. Spots on the inner lip may instead reflect a blocked minor salivary gland or a mouth sore. A clinician needs to see the exact surface and surrounding skin before naming the cause.

Clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser on the surrounding skin. Pause new cosmetics, thick ointments, fragranced toothpaste, and hair-removal products near the mouth. Do not pop or scrape white spots. A cool compress can reduce discomfort, and plain water can soothe the mouth if the inner lip feels irritated. Avoid applying acne medicines, acids, or essential oils to the lip unless a clinician has advised it. Note whether the spots itch, hurt, crust, recur, or follow a product or food.

Seek emergency care for tongue or throat swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a changed voice, widespread hives, or faintness. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, eye involvement, or swelling after an injection or dental procedure. A spot that persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, or forms a persistent crust also needs an examination rather than repeated self-treatment.
