Swollen face and burning skin: what to know

Burning can occur when the skin barrier is irritated by a new cleanser, cosmetic, fragrance, hair product, or treatment. Contact dermatitis may cause redness, swelling, stinging, itching, or a rash where a product touched the skin. Rosacea can present with facial warmth, flushing, burning, and persistent redness. Shingles may begin with burning or tingling on one side before a grouped blistering rash appears. Swelling around the lips or eyes can also accompany an allergic reaction and deserves careful monitoring.

Stop any newly introduced product and rinse gently with lukewarm water if residue may remain. Avoid scrubbing, exfoliating acids, retinoids, essential oils, makeup, and heat until the skin settles. Use a cool, clean compress for short periods, keep the head raised, and do not scratch or pop blisters. Photograph changes and note exposures, timing, pain, itch, and whether the swelling is one-sided. A clinician can distinguish irritation from conditions such as Contact Dermatitis, Rosacea, or Shingles.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Seek same-day medical assessment for eye pain or vision change, fever, severe tenderness, pus, spreading redness, or a painful one-sided blistering rash near the eye. Arrange a dermatology review when burning persists, keeps returning, follows a procedure, or does not improve after removing an irritant.
