Swelling under the chin and thyroid concerns

The thyroid is a gland at the lower front of the neck. Enlargement, called a goitre, is usually felt lower than the chin and may move when swallowing. A swelling directly under the chin is more often related to a lymph node, salivary gland, skin, or dental problem, although location can be difficult to judge without an examination.

Thyroid enlargement may occur with an overactive or underactive thyroid, but some people have no obvious hormone symptoms. Heat intolerance, tremor, racing heartbeat, and weight change can accompany Hyperthyroidism; tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, and dry skin can accompany Hypothyroidism. These symptoms are not diagnostic on their own.

Book a GP Consultation for a lump that is new, persistent, enlarging, firm, or uncomfortable. Note its exact position, duration, movement with swallowing, and any voice or swallowing change. Do not repeatedly press it or take thyroid supplements without advice. A clinician may examine the neck and request a Thyroid Function Test; further tests depend on the findings.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow, rapidly increasing neck swelling, a new muffled voice, or severe weakness with a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Prompt review is also appropriate for a persistent hoarse voice, unexplained weight change, or a lump that continues to grow.

Ask: Is the swelling in the thyroid area or another structure? Do I need a Thyroid Function Test or ultrasound? Could my medicines or supplements affect thyroid results? What changes should prompt urgent review?
