What should you know about surface EMG biofeedback?

Short answer
Surface EMG biofeedback uses skin sensors to show muscle activity so rehabilitation exercises can be practised with better awareness and control.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
Small sensors sit on the skin over a muscle group. They detect electrical activity and send it to a screen, light, or sound. The display does not stimulate the muscle and does not read your thoughts; it gives immediate feedback about when a muscle is active and how its activity changes.
A therapist may use this approach when a muscle is difficult to feel, when nearby muscles are taking over, or when coordination needs practice after pain, injury, or surgery. The information is one part of an assessment rather than a diagnosis on its own.
How a session may work
Your therapist places the sensors, explains the display, and asks you to perform a specific movement or gentle contraction. You may practise relaxing a tense muscle, switching on a weak muscle, or timing contraction with movement. The exercise is adjusted as your control improves.
Wear clothing that allows access to the treatment area and tell the therapist about skin irritation, implanted electrical devices, recent surgery, or pain that changes with movement. EMG feedback works best when it supports a broader plan that can include home practice and exercise therapy.
When to seek care
Stop the exercise and tell your clinician if you develop new or worsening pain, marked swelling, dizziness, skin reaction, or weakness. Seek urgent medical care for sudden loss of strength, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, especially with back pain.
Questions for your doctor or therapist
Ask which muscle or movement is being trained, what the display should help you notice, how often to practise, and how progress will be judged. Ask whether another exercise or adjustment is needed if you cannot produce a clear signal without compensating.

Questions people ask
Does surface EMG biofeedback hurt?
The sensors rest on the skin, so the monitoring itself should not feel like an injection. Tell the therapist if the exercise causes pain or the adhesive irritates your skin.
Can it replace physiotherapy exercises?
It is usually a coaching tool used alongside targeted exercises, movement practice, and a home programme rather than a replacement for rehabilitation.
