What should you know about sunspot freckles?

Freckles are usually flat, light-to-brown spots that become more noticeable after sun exposure and may fade when exposure decreases. A single dark mark that appears later in life, changes in shape or colour, bleeds, crusts, or feels different from nearby spots may not be a simple freckle. Sun damage can produce several kinds of pigmentation, so visual inspection is more reliable than trying to name a spot from a photograph or comparison alone.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, seek shade, wear protective clothing and a hat, and avoid intentional tanning. Check spots periodically for changes in outline, colour, size, surface, or sensation. Do not pick, bleach, or use a home acid on a pigmented mark.
