What should you know about sun exposure white spots?

A pale area can reflect reduced pigment, pigment loss, or a surface change that is easier to see after tanning. Fine scale may suggest a superficial process, while smooth, sharply pale areas that enlarge or appear in new locations deserve examination. White spots can also follow earlier inflammation or minor injury. Their appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the skin is smooth, scaly, itchy, numb, or changing, and whether hair within the area has also lost colour.

Avoid intentional tanning while you are observing the spots. Use shade, protective clothing, and sunscreen on exposed skin, following the product directions. Wash gently and moisturise if the area feels dry; avoid harsh scrubs and unlabelled lightening products. Photograph the spots and mark their locations so changes are easier to describe. A clinician can distinguish pigment change from scale or scarring by examining the surface and surrounding skin.

Book a dermatology review if a white spot is spreading, multiplying, scaly, itchy, painful, numb, or present without improvement. Seek earlier assessment when pigment loss affects the eyes, mouth, or genital skin, or follows a new medicine. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly worsening widespread skin changes with fever, swelling, or breathing symptoms. Do not assume that every pale patch is caused by sunlight.
