Sun burn with white spots: what to know

A burn can make surrounding skin red or darker, making pre-existing lighter areas more visible. Dryness, healing inflammation, or uneven pigment production can also create contrast. White bumps are different from flat pale patches: blocked follicles, acne, folliculitis, or irritation around the mouth may produce raised spots. Rosacea and other inflammatory conditions can change colour or texture without being caused by sunburn. A close look at scale, bumps, itch, pain, and the exact timing helps separate these patterns.

Stop further sun exposure, cool the irritated skin, and use a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid scrubs, picking, bleaching products, and strong acne treatments until the burn has settled. Use protective clothing and shade outdoors. Take clear photographs in consistent lighting and note whether the patches spread, become scaly, or develop bumps. Do not use LED light therapy or another cosmetic treatment on actively burned skin without professional advice.

Arrange a dermatology review if the pale areas persist after the burn heals, enlarge, become scaly or itchy, or recur with little sun exposure. Seek prompt care for severe pain, blistering, swelling, pus, fever, or involvement of the eyes. A clinician may examine the surface and pigment pattern before recommending treatment; colour alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Ask whether the areas are flat pigment changes or raised bumps, whether a fungal or inflammatory cause should be considered, and when it is safe to restart skincare or cosmetic treatments. Share your sun exposure, products, medicines, and any history of acne or sensitive skin.
