Sudden heavy bleeding that is not a period: what to know

Heavy bleeding can happen when the uterine lining is shed irregularly during perimenopause, or with conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrial polyps, or endometrial hyperplasia. Ongoing blood loss can contribute to iron deficiency anaemia. The amount of bleeding does not identify one particular cause, and sudden heavy bleeding is not automatically a sign of cancer.

If pregnancy is possible, say so immediately. Note when the bleeding began, how quickly pads become soaked, whether clots are present, and whether you have pain or dizziness.

Contact a clinician promptly for advice; use urgent services if the bleeding is heavy or you feel unwell. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and use pads so the flow is easier to observe. Do not take someone else’s medication or stop prescribed treatment without guidance.

Assessment may include a pregnancy test, blood tests for anaemia, pelvic examination, and ultrasound. Treatment depends on the cause, bleeding severity, and pregnancy possibility.

Go to urgent care for faintness, confusion, marked weakness, shortness of breath, severe pain, or bleeding that is soaking through protection rapidly. Ask someone to accompany you if you feel dizzy, and do not drive yourself when you might faint.

Ask whether you need blood tests or imaging, how to monitor blood loss, and which treatment options fit your medical history. Ask when to return if bleeding improves but does not fully stop.
