Sudden headache in pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can change sleep, hydration, posture, vision, and tolerance of heat. Congestion, a viral illness, missed meals, or tension may produce head pain. However, a new severe headache can also occur with high blood pressure and pregnancy-related complications, particularly later in pregnancy or after birth.

The pattern is clinically useful: sudden onset, pain that does not settle, flashing lights, blurred vision, pain under the ribs, marked swelling, shortness of breath, confusion, weakness, or seizures all raise concern. A headache symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself, so assessment should consider your pregnancy stage, blood pressure, medicines, and examination findings.

Stop what you are doing, rest in a cool quiet place, drink fluids if you can, and record the onset and associated symptoms. Contact your maternity team or an urgent medical service for a new sudden headache rather than relying on home treatment alone. Take only medicines already confirmed as suitable for your pregnancy; do not start a new product without advice.

Tell the clinician about reduced fetal movement, recent illness, vomiting, visual symptoms, blood-pressure readings, and any previous migraine history.
