What should you know about sudden cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated, contains mineral crystals, mucus or cells, or mixes with vaginal discharge or semen. Dehydration often makes urine darker and stronger-smelling; drinking fluids may improve that change. A Urinary Tract Infection may cause cloudy or strong-smelling urine with burning, urgency, frequency or lower abdominal discomfort. A Kidney Infection may add fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back.

Appearance alone cannot confirm infection. A sample tested by a clinician can look for signs of inflammation, blood or bacteria and guide treatment. New cloudy urine that keeps returning deserves attention, especially if you are pregnant or have urinary or kidney problems.

Drink water regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and observe whether the appearance changes as you hydrate. Do not use leftover antibiotics or urinary remedies. Note the colour, smell, timing, pain, frequency and any discharge. If symptoms continue, arrange a urine assessment; provide a clean midstream sample if the clinic gives you collection instructions.

Seek urgent care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion or feeling suddenly very unwell. Blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, severe pain or pregnancy also warrants prompt medical advice. A mild change after low fluid intake may settle, but persistent or recurrent cloudiness should be checked rather than judged by appearance alone.

Ask whether you need urine dipstick or culture testing, how to collect the sample, and whether medicines or supplements could alter its appearance. Tell the clinician about burning, urgency, fever, back pain, blood, discharge, recent antibiotics, pregnancy and any kidney history.
