Sudden acid reflux: what to know

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe, causing burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, belching, or throat irritation. A large or late meal, lying down soon after eating, alcohol, smoking, some medicines, or pressure on the abdomen can trigger an episode. Hiatus Hernia and other conditions may make reflux easier to experience. Reflux can also contribute to Cough or difficulty sleeping, but these symptoms have other possible causes.

Stay upright after eating, choose smaller meals, and notice which foods or drinks bring symptoms on. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and ask a pharmacist whether an over-the-counter antacid or other treatment is suitable with your medicines and health conditions. Do not keep treating repeated episodes without review. Arrange assessment for frequent reflux, persistent Cough, trouble swallowing, vomiting, or unexplained weight change.

Call emergency services for new or severe Chest Tightness, pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, sweating, faintness, or difficulty breathing. Seek prompt care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe Abdominal Pain, or food becoming stuck. Reflux should not be assumed when chest symptoms are unexplained.
