Sudd diverticulitis: what to know

Diverticula are small pouches that can form in the bowel wall. Diverticulitis happens when one or more become inflamed. Pain is often felt in the lower abdomen and may come with fever, nausea, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea. Diverticular disease can also exist without active inflammation, so symptoms need context and examination. Other abdominal conditions can feel similar.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain is new, persistent, or accompanied by fever or a bowel change. A clinician may examine your abdomen and decide whether tests or prescription treatment are needed. Follow the eating and drinking advice you are given; do not start laxatives, antibiotics, or pain medicines without checking that they are suitable. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, heavy rectal bleeding, or inability to pass stool or gas. Fever with worsening pain also needs prompt assessment. Abdominal Pain with pregnancy, significant illness, or a weakened immune system warrants early medical advice.
