Successful VBAC after one C-section: what to know

Equipment and setting used in Caesarean Section

Short answer

A successful VBAC after one C-section means a vaginal birth following one caesarean, with eligibility and safety planning based on the uterine scar and current pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What one previous caesarean changes

The reason for the earlier caesarean, the operative report and the uterine incision are central to the conversation. Your clinician also considers placental location, the baby’s position, other medical conditions and how this pregnancy is developing. Labour is monitored because a previous uterine scar can separate during labour, which may require urgent treatment. Planning a VBAC does not remove the possibility of caesarean birth if circumstances change.

Build a flexible birth plan

Ask for the previous surgical notes and review them with your obstetric team. Discuss when to contact the hospital, continuous fetal monitoring, pain-relief choices and how mobility can be supported. If induction is considered, ask how cervical ripening, oxytocin or other methods affect the plan. If the baby is breech, an external cephalic version may be discussed when suitable. After birth, postnatal physiotherapy can help with recovery, movement and pelvic-floor concerns.

When urgent assessment is needed

Call your maternity unit promptly for contractions, vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, reduced fetal movement or persistent abdominal pain. Seek emergency help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or sudden weakness. Also follow individual advice for symptoms linked with pre-eclampsia, such as a severe headache, visual changes or pain beneath the ribs. During labour, report any abrupt change in pain or how you feel.

Questions to ask

Ask: What was the incision type in my C-section? Am I a candidate for VBAC? Which hospital resources are available? How would induction or oxytocin affect monitoring? What happens if the baby is breech? When would repeat caesarean be safer?
