What should you know about subcutaneous bursa pain?

A bursa reduces rubbing between skin, bone, tendon, or another surface. A superficial bursa can become inflamed after kneeling, leaning, a knock, tight equipment, or repeated contact. The area may feel sore, warm, or soft and look swollen. Joint swelling can look similar, and infection, gout, skin disease, or an injury may need different treatment. The exact site and whether the swelling moves with a joint help a clinician narrow the cause.

Reduce pressure and friction on the tender area, use a comfortable barrier or padding, and avoid activities that repeatedly compress it. A clinician can advise whether anti-inflammatory medication is suitable after considering stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, and other health factors. Persistent swelling may lead to discussion of a cortisone injection or joint aspiration, but these are not appropriate for every swollen area and infection should be considered first. Do not puncture the swelling yourself.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, drainage, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, or a wound over the area. These features can indicate infection. Arrange an assessment if symptoms follow a significant injury, restrict movement, or continue despite removing pressure.
