What should you know about a stye white bump?

A stye, also called a hordeolum, may appear as a red swelling with a pale centre along the eyelid margin. The eyelid can feel sore, gritty, or swollen, especially when blinking. Some styes form on the outside of the lid; others sit deeper and may cause broader puffiness. A little crusting or eye discharge can occur, but a white spot alone cannot confirm the cause. A blocked oil gland, irritation, or another eyelid problem can look similar.

Place a clean, comfortably warm compress over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating it through the day. Use a fresh clean cloth each time, and wash your hands before and after touching the eyelid. Keep the area free from eye makeup and contact lenses until it settles. Do not squeeze, pierce, or try to pop the white bump, because this can spread irritation or infection. Avoid sharing towels, face cloths, or cosmetics. If the eyelid remains painful or swollen, a clinician can examine it and decide whether treatment is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain or swelling is severe, the redness spreads around the eye, vision changes, light becomes difficult to tolerate, or moving the eye hurts.
