What should you know about a stye on the upper lid?

An upper-lid stye, or hordeolum, starts near an eyelash follicle or an oil gland. It can appear as a red, sensitive spot at the lash line, or it may sit inside the lid and feel like a sore bead beneath the skin. Watering, mild crusting, and a sensation that something is in the eye can accompany it. The upper lid may look puffy because inflammation disturbs nearby tissue.

A firm, less painful lump may represent a blocked gland rather than an active stye. General redness across the eye, discharge, or visual symptoms should be considered separately and may need a clinical examination.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed upper lid for several minutes at a time. Repeat regularly during the day, using a clean cloth each time. Gentle warmth can loosen material around the gland; rubbing, pressing, and trying to pop the lump can worsen irritation.
