What should you know about stye under lower eyelid?

A stye is an inflamed eyelid follicle or oil gland. Under the lower eyelid, it may appear as a small sore lump along the lashes or as swelling on the inner lid. The area can feel gritty when you blink, and watering or a little crusting may occur. Some lower-lid lumps are blocked glands that become firm after the initial tenderness settles. A clinician can distinguish these possibilities by looking at the lid and the eye surface, especially when the swelling is persistent or repeatedly returns.

Start by washing your hands before and after touching the area. Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eye for several minutes and repeat it at intervals during the day. Use a clean cloth each time and wipe away any softened discharge without scrubbing. Leave the lump alone: squeezing, scratching, or puncturing it can increase irritation. Avoid contact lenses and eye cosmetics until the eyelid is comfortable. If symptoms do not ease, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a product is suitable rather than using someone else’s drops.
