What should you know about stye types?

An external stye starts near an eyelash follicle or a small gland at the eyelid edge. It often looks like a tender red spot or pimple on the outside of the lid. An internal stye develops in an oil gland on the inner side of the eyelid and may cause more general swelling, soreness, or a lump that is easier to feel than see. Either type can water, crust, or make the eyelid uncomfortable. A firm lump that remains after tenderness fades may be a blocked gland rather than an active stye.

Use clean hands and place a comfortably warm cloth over the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this during the day. Warmth can soften material in the eyelid glands and encourage natural drainage. Never squeeze or pierce the area. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until irritation has cleared, and wash discharge away gently with clean water. Do not put household products or ordinary skin creams in the eye. If the lump is recurring, record which eyelid is affected and discuss possible eyelid inflammation with a clinician.

Seek a GP Consultation when the diagnosis is unclear, the lump persists, episodes recur, or swelling spreads across the face. Urgent care is needed for a change in vision, severe pain, pronounced light sensitivity, fever, pain when moving the eye, or swelling around the eye. Red Eye or Eye Discharge may occur alongside a stye, but either symptom can also have another cause.
