Stye treatment: what to know

Warmth softens oils around the eyelid and encourages natural drainage, while clean hands and lid care reduce further irritation. A stye should not be cut, popped or rubbed, because this can injure the eyelid and spread inflammation.

A clinician may inspect the lid, the eye surface and nearby skin. Treatment depends on the findings; an antibiotic is not suitable for every eyelid lump, particularly when the main problem is a blocked gland rather than active infection.

Place a clean warm cloth on the closed eyelid for several minutes and repeat it through the day. Wash hands before touching the eye, gently remove crusting, and use separate towels. Stop contact lenses and eye makeup until irritation has cleared.

Do not use leftover eye drops or another person’s prescription. If the lump is uncomfortable, ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is appropriate for you, especially if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.

Arrange medical advice if the lump persists, recurs, becomes increasingly painful, or causes ongoing discharge. Seek prompt care for fever, spreading facial swelling, vision change, severe eye pain, or pain when moving the eye.

A GP can decide whether the presentation fits a stye and whether another eyelid or eye condition needs treatment. Take any current eye medicines with you and mention contact lens use.
