Stye symptoms: what to know

A stye often begins as a sensitive spot at the eyelid margin. It may become a small red lump, with tenderness when blinking or touching the lid. The eye can water, feel gritty, or become uncomfortable around bright light because the inflamed lid rubs against the eye.

Some styes form on the outside of the lid and are easy to see. Others develop deeper in an eyelid gland and cause broader soreness or swelling. Crusting or discharge may accompany an eye infection, so the pattern of symptoms matters.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time and repeat during the day. Keep hands clean, avoid rubbing, and do not press, pop or pierce the lump.

Remove eye makeup and contact lenses while the eyelid is irritated. Use a fresh personal towel and avoid sharing cosmetics. If symptoms are not settling or you are unsure whether the lump is a stye, book a GP assessment.

Get prompt advice if pain is severe, vision changes, the eye hurts when it moves, fever develops, or redness and swelling spread beyond the eyelid. These features can signal a problem needing more than home care.

A recurring lump, persistent discharge, or symptoms that fail to improve should also be reviewed. Bring details about when it started, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any products used near the eye.
