Stye swollen under the eye: what to know

A stye is an inflamed spot near an eyelash or an eyelid oil gland. The bump may sit on the eyelid edge, while nearby tissues look puffy, sore or red. Fluid, crusting or a gritty feeling can occur, especially if the eyelid has been rubbing against the eye.

Puffiness alone does not show how serious the cause is. A clinician may check whether the swelling is limited to the eyelid or whether infection is affecting surrounding skin. Eye discharge or marked redness can point to another eye problem as well.

Hold a clean, comfortably warm cloth against the closed eyelid for several minutes, then repeat through the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the area, keep the eyelid clean, and avoid squeezing or piercing the bump.

Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye feels settled. Do not share towels, cosmetics or pillowcases. If the swelling makes it hard to see, or the area continues to enlarge, arrange a clinical review.

Seek prompt medical advice for vision changes, pain when moving the eye, severe eye pain, fever, or swelling that spreads into the cheek or around the eye. Urgent assessment is also sensible if the eye becomes difficult to open or you feel generally unwell.

Arrange a GP review when the lump is not improving, keeps returning, or the diagnosis is uncertain. A clinician can examine the eyelid and decide whether treatment for another cause is needed.
