Stye outside the eyelid

An external stye usually begins as a sore, red point on the outer lid edge. The lid may become puffy, and the area can feel tender when blinking. A small yellow or white head may form as the blocked area collects material. This appearance is limited to the eyelid and should not be confused with a widespread infection around the eye.

Clean your hands, close the eye, and place a clean warm cloth over the lid for several minutes. Repeat regularly while it remains tender. Keep the cloth comfortably warm rather than hot, especially on the thin eyelid skin.

Do not pop the head or pull out the eyelash yourself. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms have cleared, and discard eye products that may have touched the affected area. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable products.

Book a GP Consultation when the lump does not improve, returns often, or interferes with daily activities. Seek urgent assessment for severe pain, fever, rapidly spreading redness, swelling of the cheek, difficulty moving the eye, light sensitivity, or any change in vision.

Ask whether the lump is an external stye or another eyelid condition, how long to continue warm compresses, and whether any prescribed treatment is suitable for your eye. Tell the clinician about previous styes, skin conditions, contact lenses, and changes in vision.
