What should you know about a stye that keeps coming back?

Eyelid glands release oils that help protect the eye surface. When openings become blocked or the lid edges stay inflamed, another tender lump can form. Touching the eyes, leaving makeup at the lash line, or using old eye products may add irritation. Some people also have ongoing eyelid-edge inflammation or dry-eye symptoms that make styes return. A recurring lump is not automatically the same problem each time, so the pattern and examination matter.

Record which eye is affected, where the lump appears, how long it lasts and whether it leaves a firm painless bump. This information helps a clinician separate repeated styes from other eyelid lumps.

Clean your hands before touching the face. During symptoms, use a comfortably warm compress on closed lids and clean away loosened crust gently. Once the eye is settled, regular gentle lid cleaning may help if a clinician recommends it. Remove eye makeup fully, avoid sharing cosmetics or towels, and replace eye products that may be contaminated. Do not squeeze a stye or use leftover prescription drops without advice.

If contact lenses are part of your routine, ask whether your cleaning method or wear schedule could be aggravating the eyelids. Keep a note of products and habits that preceded each episode.

Arrange a GP Consultation when styes recur, a lump remains after tenderness resolves, or symptoms interfere with contact lenses or daily activities. Seek prompt help for spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, fever, pain with eye movement, light sensitivity or any vision change. Marked eye discharge or persistent red eye also merits assessment, since these features may point to a different problem.

Ask whether the eyelid edges show inflammation, whether a firm residual lump needs treatment, and which lid-cleaning routine suits you. Mention skin conditions, dry-eye symptoms, medicines, contact-lens use and every recent episode. Ask what recurrence pattern should lead to an eye-specialist referral.
