A stye-like sore spot in the nose

The area just inside the nostril can become tender, crusted, or swollen when a hair follicle or small gland is irritated. Picking, plucking hairs, forceful nose blowing, or dry air can make the lining more sensitive. A nasal bump should not be assumed to be the same condition as a stye on the eyelid.

Painful swelling at the nose entrance may need an examination, especially when redness extends onto the nose or face. Do not insert non-prescribed creams, cotton buds, or sharp objects into the nostril.

Wash your hands before touching your nose. Use gentle warmth on the outside of the nose for several minutes, and keep the area clean without squeezing or opening the bump. Avoid picking, shaving, or plucking around it while sore; use a separate towel and do not share personal items.

Seek prompt medical advice if nasal pain or swelling is worsening, redness is spreading, pus is increasing, or the bump keeps returning. Urgent help is appropriate for fever, rapidly developing facial swelling, severe headache, vision change, or feeling very unwell.

A GP Consultation can assess whether this is follicle inflammation, another skin problem, or an issue needing prescription treatment. Do not delay if swelling approaches the eye.
