Stye forming: early signs and care

A stye is inflammation around an eyelash follicle or an oil gland in the eyelid. Early symptoms can include a focused sore spot, mild swelling, redness, watering, or a gritty feeling. The bump may become more visible over the next day or so, but not every red or sore eyelid is a stye.

Irritated eyelid edges, allergy, or infection of the eye surface can cause similar discomfort. Discharge, widespread redness, and light sensitivity are useful details to track.

Wash your hands, then place a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid for around ten minutes. Repeat several times a day if it feels soothing. Do not pop or pierce the bump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye is comfortable, and avoid sharing face cloths or towels.
