Stye for months: what to know

A short-lived stye is usually tender and sits near an eyelash or eyelid gland. A months-long lump may instead be a longstanding blocked gland, repeated eyelid inflammation, or another lesion that needs direct examination. The appearance, texture, exact position, and effect on vision all help a clinician decide what it is.

Recurrence in one spot, loss of eyelashes near the lump, bleeding, or a change in its surface should be reported. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they make an assessment more important.

Take a clear record of when it started, whether it has changed, and any previous treatments. Gentle warm compresses may soothe eyelid blockage, but stop if they increase pain.
