Stye for a month: what to know

A typical stye begins near an eyelash or oil gland and may be sore, red, and swollen. When inflammation settles, a firm, less painful lump can remain because the gland is still blocked. Other eyelid problems can look similar, so duration alone cannot identify the cause. An examination can distinguish the lump from infection and check the eyelid margin and the eye surface.

Record whether the lump is growing, recurring in the same place, draining, or changing your vision. Crusting or discharge may point to irritation of the eyelid or eye and is worth mentioning.

Until then, use a clean warm compress on the closed eyelid for around ten minutes, repeat several times daily, and gently clean away any loosened debris. Avoid squeezing, rubbing, shared towels, eye makeup, and contact lenses if the eye feels irritated.

Do not place household products or non-prescribed medicine in the eye. A clinician can advise whether any treatment or specialist review is appropriate.

Get urgent help if swelling spreads around the eye, pain becomes severe, fever develops, eye movement hurts, vision changes, or double vision appears.
