Can stress cause a stye?

How the structures involved in Stye differ from normal

Short answer

Stress may contribute indirectly to a stye, but a stye usually begins with a blocked, inflamed eyelid gland or lash follicle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main mechanism
Blocked and inflamed eyelid gland or lash follicle
Helpful first step
Warm compress on the closed eyelid
Avoid
Squeezing or piercing the bump

What the connection means

Stress does not create a stye by itself. During a stressful period, you may rub your eyes, sleep poorly, touch your face more often, or find eyelid hygiene harder to maintain. These habits can transfer bacteria or irritate the eyelid. A tender red bump at the lash line is typical. A stye can also cause watering, crusting, or local puffiness. Redness that spreads beyond the eyelid needs a different assessment; see more about [Red Eye](/symptoms/red-eye/) and [Eye Discharge](/symptoms/eye-discharge/).

What you can do today

Wash your hands before touching the eye. Hold a clean, comfortably warm compress against the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this through the day. Do not squeeze, pierce, or scrub the bump. Avoid eye makeup until the eyelid has settled, and use a clean towel and pillowcase. Taking breaks from close-up work and addressing sleep or stress may reduce rubbing, although these steps do not replace eyelid care.

When to seek care

Arrange a GP assessment if the swelling is worsening, the redness is spreading, vision changes, light becomes uncomfortable, or pain feels deeper than the eyelid. Seek prompt care if the eye cannot open normally, you feel unwell, or swelling affects the cheek. A clinician can check whether this is a stye or another eyelid problem; a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) may help if it keeps returning.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be a stye or another cause of eyelid swelling? What eyelid-cleaning routine suits me? Should I stop any eye products, and what should I do if similar bumps recur?

Questions people ask

Does stress directly cause a stye?

Stress is not usually the direct cause. It may contribute through eye rubbing, disrupted sleep, or changes in daily hygiene.

Can I use makeup while I have a stye?

Avoid eye makeup until the eyelid has recovered, because products and applicators can irritate the area or spread germs.
