Styes in both eyes: what to know

A stye is a local tender lump at an eyelid edge. Similar bumps in both eyes can happen when both lids are irritated, when eyelid oils block more than one gland, or when hands, cosmetics, or towels transfer germs. However, itch, diffuse redness, sticky discharge, or light sensitivity across both eyes may indicate another condition rather than two simple styes. Wash hands before and after eyelid care. Use a clean warm cloth for each eye, or wash the cloth thoroughly between eyes; do not move the same cloth from one lid to the other. Avoid squeezing either bump, sharing towels, applying eye makeup, or wearing contact lenses while the eyes are irritated. Clean reusable cosmetics or replace eye products used shortly before the symptoms began.

Arrange an assessment if both eyes remain uncomfortable, the lumps recur, or the eyelids are crusted or persistently inflamed.
