Short answer

A stuffy, congested nose is often temporary, but persistent blockage or breathing difficulty deserves an assessment of its cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Congestion happens when the lining inside the nose swells or mucus narrows the airflow. A common cold may bring a runny nose, sore throat, cough, or tiredness. Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and clear discharge, often after exposure to a trigger. Sinusitis may add facial pressure, reduced smell, or thicker discharge. Ongoing night-time blockage can also disturb sleep and may need a different assessment.

The symptom alone does not identify one condition. Notice whether it affects one or both sides, how long it lasts, and what makes it better or worse.

Ways to ease congestion

Drink fluids, rest, and consider saline spray or rinse if you can use it comfortably and safely. Keep smoke and other irritants away from the nose. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable when sneezing and itching point to an allergic trigger. Use decongestant sprays only as directed, because prolonged use can worsen blockage.

If symptoms keep returning, record possible triggers, facial pain, discharge, fever, and sleep disruption before a consultation. This pattern can help distinguish a short illness from a recurring nasal problem.

Warning signs

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling around the eye, vision changes, a severe headache with fever or neck stiffness, confusion, or a serious injury to the nose. Arrange medical review for persistent one-sided blockage, recurrent nosebleeds, significant facial pain, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.

What to ask

Ask whether the pattern fits a cold, allergy, or sinus problem; which nasal treatments are appropriate; how to use a saline rinse safely; and when ongoing blockage needs examination of the nose or sinuses.
