Stretch marks on the vulval area: what to know

People sometimes use “vag” to describe the vulva, the external genital skin. True stretch marks are usually long, narrow lines that follow skin tension and may be itchy or coloured at first. They can be associated with growth, weight change, pregnancy, or individual skin tendency. The vagina is internal, so a mark seen on the outside should be described to a clinician using the exact location: outer skin, pubic area, groin crease, or inner thigh.

Wash gently, pat dry, avoid fragranced products and scratching, and choose breathable underwear if the skin feels irritated. Do not apply acids, bleaching agents, or unprescribed procedures to genital skin. A dermatologist or gynaecologist should confirm the diagnosis before any cosmetic plan. Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy may be discussed for suitable external skin, but the delicate location changes the risk and treatment approach; internal treatment is not appropriate for stretch marks.

Arrange prompt assessment for pain, burning, marked itch, sores, blisters, bleeding, discharge, swelling, colour change, or a patch that thickens or does not heal. These features can reflect irritation, infection, dermatitis, or another vulval condition rather than stretch marks. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing swelling or severe pain. Stable, painless lines can be reviewed routinely if reassurance or cosmetic advice is wanted.

Ask whether the change is on the vulva or nearby thigh skin, what conditions need ruling out, which products are safe, and whether any cosmetic procedure is suitable for that exact surface.
