Short answer

Stretch marks on the hips during pregnancy are a common skin response to stretching and hormonal change, and they do not harm the baby.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why they appear

Pregnancy can stretch the skin over the hips, sides, abdomen, breasts, and thighs. New lines may be pink, red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin and can itch or feel tight. Over time they commonly soften in colour, although some texture may remain. Genetics, skin elasticity, body-size change, and the timing of growth all influence whether marks develop; moisturising can support comfort but cannot reliably prevent them.

Comfort and safe planning

Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser when skin feels dry, keep nails short, and use gentle cleansing rather than scratching. Discuss any medicated cream with your maternity clinician, especially products containing retinoids, because not every stretch-mark treatment is suitable during pregnancy. If you want cosmetic improvement, wait for an individual postpartum plan; a dermatologist may later discuss Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy after examining the skin and considering breastfeeding and healing.

When to contact your clinician

Contact your maternity or medical team if itching is severe, widespread, especially on the palms or soles, or accompanied by a rash, yellowing skin, dark urine, or feeling unwell. Seek care for painful, hot, swollen, blistered, or infected-looking skin. Those symptoms are not explained by ordinary stretch marks alone.

Questions to ask

Ask which moisturisers and medicines are suitable in pregnancy, whether the itch needs a separate evaluation, when cosmetic treatment could be considered after birth, and how breastfeeding may affect that timing.
