Stretch Marks on the Back: Causes and Treatment

Short answer
Stretch marks on the back often follow rapid growth or body-size change and are usually a texture and colour concern.

How back marks develop
The back can develop horizontal or diagonal lines when the deeper skin is stretched during growth, weight change, or increased muscle bulk. New marks may be itchy and coloured red, pink, purple, or brown; mature marks commonly become paler and less inflamed. Their location can make self-inspection difficult, so a mirror or another person's help may reveal changes. Ordinary stretch marks are not contagious and do not result from poor hygiene.
Managing their appearance
Use a moisturiser if the skin is dry or itchy, and avoid aggressive scrubbing. Protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light to reduce contrast. When the marks are difficult to see or reach, a dermatologist can examine them directly and explain whether Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy is appropriate. Back treatment may require planning around clothing, sweating, skin sensitivity, and aftercare. A consultation should include discussion of pigment risk and the expected pace of change.
When to arrange a review
Get medical advice if back marks appear abruptly over a large area, are painful or bleeding, or come with easy bruising, weakness, or other unexplained symptoms. Review is also sensible after starting steroid treatment or when the lines look unlike the person's other stretch marks. A clinician can check the pattern and decide whether any further assessment is needed.
Questions to bring
Ask how the back pattern fits stretch marks, whether a recent growth or medication change is relevant, how treatment will be delivered safely on the back, what aftercare is required, and which changes should prompt a follow-up.
