Stretch Marks After Weight Loss: What to Know

Short answer
Stretch marks after weight loss are healed changes in stretched skin that may fade but often remain visible; treatment can soften their colour and texture.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medical name
- Striae distensae
- Typical course
- Colour often softens with time, while texture may remain.
What the change means
Weight loss does not erase the structural change that formed while skin was expanding. Marks may look more noticeable when surrounding fat reduces, but that does not mean the skin has been damaged by the weight loss itself. Early marks can be pink, red, purple, or darker than nearby skin; older marks commonly become lighter and slightly indented. They are not contagious and are usually a cosmetic concern rather than a sign of illness.
Options for improving their appearance
Keep weight changes gradual when possible, moisturise for comfort, and protect exposed areas from tanning so colour contrast is less obvious. Creams may support hydration but cannot rebuild all altered skin fibres. A dermatologist can assess the mark’s age, colour, texture, and your skin tone before discussing microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy. These approaches may require a course of sessions and can cause temporary redness, swelling, or pigment changes.
When to arrange a medical review
Arrange a dermatology review if marks appear suddenly without a clear change in body size, spread quickly, become painful, bleed, or are accompanied by easy bruising or other new symptoms. Seek advice before treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, prone to raised scars, or using medicines that affect healing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which layer of the skin is affected, what improvement is realistic for your mark’s colour and texture, how many visits may be needed, and how your skin tone changes the risk of temporary or lasting pigment alteration.

Questions people ask
Can weight loss create new stretch marks?
Marks can become visible after weight loss because earlier changes stand out more; new marks are linked to skin stretching or hormonal factors rather than fat loss alone.
Can treatment remove stretch marks completely?
Treatment may make marks less noticeable, but results vary and complete removal should not be expected.
