What should you know about stress stye?

Short answer
Stress does not directly create every stye, but it may contribute indirectly through rubbing, poor sleep, or changes in skin and eyelid care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a stye is
A stye is a tender, localised lump at the edge of the eyelid, often with redness, swelling, and soreness. It can form when a small eyelid gland or eyelash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. Stress-related habits, such as touching the eyes or leaving makeup on overnight, may irritate the area, but they do not explain every eyelid lump.
A stye is different from a deeper, usually less tender blocked gland called a chalazion. Eye discharge, widespread redness, contact-lens use, or changes in vision may point to another problem and should not be assumed to be a simple stye.
Care at home
Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day. Wash your hands before touching the eye, keep the eyelid clean, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the area settles. Do not squeeze, pierce, or share towels.
Rest and stress-management may help you avoid rubbing the eye and may make regular eyelid hygiene easier. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether treatment is needed; antibiotic drops are not appropriate for every lump.
When to seek care
Arrange a GP consultation if the lump is not improving, keeps returning, or makes it difficult to open the eye. Seek urgent eye care for worsening pain or swelling around the eye, fever, reduced vision, pain when moving the eye, or marked sensitivity to light.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the lump is a stye, chalazion, or another eyelid condition, how to clean the lid safely, and whether recurrent episodes suggest blepharitis or another trigger. Mention contact lenses, cosmetics, discharge, and any vision change.

Questions people ask
Does stress cause styes?
Stress is not the sole cause of every stye, though stress-related rubbing, tiredness, or changes in eyelid care may contribute to irritation and blockage.
When is an eyelid lump urgent?
Urgent assessment is needed for vision change, fever, severe pain, pain with eye movement, or swelling spreading around the eye.
