What Should You Know About a Stress PET Scan?

The word stress can cause confusion because it may describe the way a cardiac scan tests blood flow, rather than emotional stress. If your appointment is with an oncology team, confirm the exact scan name and its purpose before preparing.

In cardiac imaging, a PET scan may compare blood flow to the heart muscle when the heart is at rest and when a medicine temporarily increases the heart's workload or changes its blood vessels. This is different from an exercise test on a treadmill. The team monitors you while the tracer is used to create images.

In cancer care, a PET-CT scan combines a radiotracer image with CT images. A tracer such as FDG can collect more in some tissues that use glucose actively. The scan can help clinicians assess areas of concern, look for disease elsewhere, or evaluate response alongside examination and other tests. Increased tracer activity is not specific to cancer and needs clinical interpretation.

Follow the appointment instructions exactly. They may cover when to stop eating, which drinks are allowed, diabetes medicines, caffeine, and medicines that affect the heart. Do not change prescribed medicines unless the imaging or cardiology team gives you a plan.

Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, kidney problems, asthma, and any recent illness. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for registration, tracer administration, a waiting period, imaging, and observation when cardiac stress medicine is used. Bring prior scans or reports if requested.

During or shortly after a stress study, tell staff immediately about chest pressure, severe breathlessness, faintness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or symptoms that feel different from the expected sensations explained beforehand. The team is there to monitor and treat reactions.

After you leave, seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent chest pain, marked breathing difficulty, fainting, new weakness, or confusion. Contact the imaging department about a delayed rash, swelling, or other unexpected reaction and follow its discharge instructions.

Ask: Is this a cardiac stress PET scan or an oncology PET-CT scan? What question is the scan intended to answer? Which medicines, foods, drinks, and diabetes instructions apply to me? How will the result be combined with my examination and other tests? When and how will I receive the report?
