Stress and dermatitis on the hands

Hand eczema may cause dryness, itching, redness, burning, scaling and splits around the fingers or palms. Stress can make itching harder to control and may coincide with habits such as more frequent washing or scratching. Detergents, solvents, gloves, metals and prolonged contact with water can also weaken the outer barrier. The appearance alone cannot identify whether irritation, allergy or another skin condition is responsible.

Notice which tasks precede symptoms, whether both hands are involved, and whether the rash reaches the wrists. These details help a clinician distinguish contact dermatitis from eczema patterns and infection.

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a fragrance-free cleanser when needed, and apply a thick moisturiser after washing while the skin is slightly damp. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical work, with breathable cotton liners if tolerated, and change damp gloves. Avoid picking and fragranced products. Arrange a review when cracks keep reopening, work is becoming difficult, sleep is disrupted, or the rash persists despite barrier care.
