Can stress cause a cough?

Short answer
Stress can trigger a cough by changing breathing, drying or tightening the throat, and increasing sensitivity to normal airway sensations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding a stress-linked cough
A cough linked with stress may appear during worry, speaking, rapid breathing or a tense situation and may ease when you are calm or asleep. Throat clearing, chest tightness and a sensation of not getting a satisfying breath can accompany it. Stress can also amplify a cough that began with an infection or irritation.
Other causes include Acid Reflux, Allergic Rhinitis, asthma and Common Cold. Acute Bronchitis can follow an infection, while Chronic Cough, Bronchiectasis or Bronchiolitis need a clinician's assessment when symptoms persist or breathing is affected.
Ways to settle irritation
Sit upright, relax your shoulders and breathe gently through your nose if comfortable. Take small sips of water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and notice whether meals, lying down, exercise, cold air or conversation trigger symptoms. A symptom diary can show whether coughing follows stress or continues independently of it.
Do not assume a recurrent cough is psychological. Arrange an assessment if it lasts, interrupts sleep, limits activity or comes with wheeze, reflux symptoms, fever or repeated chest infections. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
When to seek urgent help
Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, sudden chest pain or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. Arrange prompt medical review for breathlessness, wheezing, fever, chest pain, blood in sputum, unexplained weight loss or a cough that is worsening. Stress should not be used to explain away these warning signs.
Useful questions for an appointment
Ask whether the pattern fits airway irritation, reflux, allergy, asthma or another cause, and whether you need breathing tests or treatment. Describe when the cough began, whether it is dry or produces mucus, what brings it on, whether it occurs at night, and any medicines, smoking or environmental exposures.
