Short answer

Stress can contribute to new or returning bedwetting, but physical causes should also be checked when other symptoms appear.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it can happen

Bedwetting is urine passed during sleep. Changes at home, school, relationships or routine can disturb sleep and coping, and bedwetting may start again after a dry period. It is not deliberate and blame or punishment can increase distress. Other possibilities include constipation, a [Urinary Tract Infection](/conditions/urinary-tract-infection/), disturbed breathing from [Obstructive Sleep Apnoea](/conditions/obstructive-sleep-apnoea/), or increased thirst and urination from [Type 1 Diabetes](/conditions/type-1-diabetes/).

Helpful next steps

Keep the response calm and practical. Use the toilet before sleep, maintain a regular daytime drinking and toilet routine, and protect the mattress without making the person feel ashamed. Avoid waking someone repeatedly unless a clinician has advised it. Keep a short diary of wet nights, daytime urgency, bowel habits, thirst, sleep quality and recent stressors. Arrange a routine review when bedwetting starts suddenly, returns after a dry period, or is causing distress.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for pain or burning when passing urine, fever, blood in urine, new daytime accidents, marked constipation, unusual thirst, weight loss or unusual tiredness. Urgent assessment is needed if the person is very drowsy, vomiting, breathing deeply or becoming rapidly unwell. Bedwetting with loud snoring, pauses in breathing or morning headaches also warrants review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether urine testing, bowel assessment or a review of sleep is needed, and which treatment options fit the person’s age and circumstances. Mention new stressors without assuming they explain everything, and ask how to support confidence at home.
