Strep A and cough: what to know

Strep A throat infection more often causes a sudden sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever, swollen neck glands, or inflamed tonsils. A cough, runny nose, hoarse voice, or red eyes fits a viral respiratory illness more closely, although symptoms can overlap. A cough does not by itself show that someone has Strep A.

Cough can also occur with acid reflux, allergies, asthma, airway conditions, or a lingering infection. A dry cough and a mucus-producing cough can have different causes. The pattern, duration, breathing, temperature, and examination help a clinician decide whether testing or another treatment is appropriate.

Drink regularly, rest, and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Warm fluids may soothe an irritated throat. Honey may help a cough in adults and children over one year; never give honey to an infant. Ask a pharmacist about suitable medicines, particularly for children, pregnancy, asthma, or long-term conditions.

Do not start leftover antibiotics for a cough. Antibiotics do not treat most viral coughs and can cause unwanted effects. Cover coughs, wash hands, and avoid close contact when feverish or feeling unwell. Arrange an assessment if the cough persists, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep or daily activities.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt medical advice for a child who is unusually sleepy, breathing fast, or struggling to feed. A cough that steadily worsens also deserves review.
