What should you know about strain headache?

Short answer
A strain headache is head pain that can follow exertion, muscle tension, stress, or holding the neck in one position.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What strain headache can feel like
Pain may feel pressing, tightening, or aching rather than sharply pulsing. It can spread across the forehead, temples, scalp, or the back of the head, and tight muscles around the neck, jaw, or shoulders may add to the discomfort. Screen use, poor posture, missed rest, emotional stress, and strenuous activity can all contribute. A headache after exertion can also have another cause, so the setting and accompanying symptoms matter.
What you can do now
Pause the activity that brought on the pain, drink fluids, and rest in a quiet place. Gentle neck and shoulder movement, a warm compress, or a cool cloth may help. Adjust your screen so your head stays level, relax your jaw, and take regular movement breaks. If you use an over-the-counter pain medicine, follow its label and avoid repeated use on many days without medical advice. Keeping a simple record of triggers, timing, sleep, fluids, and medicines can reveal a pattern.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, a new vision problem, or a headache after a significant injury. Arrange medical assessment if headaches are new, becoming more frequent, repeatedly follow exertion, wake you from sleep, or do not settle with reasonable self-care. A clinician may check your neurological function, blood pressure, vision, medicines, and neck muscles.
Questions for your doctor
Could my posture, neck muscles, stress, medicines, or another condition be contributing? Which warning signs should prompt urgent care? What pain-relief plan is suitable if these headaches recur?
