How to stop a flaky scalp

Flakes may be loose and dry, oily and yellowish, or attached to irritated skin. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis commonly produce scaling, while scalp psoriasis can create thicker plaques. Scalp ringworm may cause scaling alongside broken hairs, tender areas, or patchy hair loss. The appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Wash regularly with lukewarm water and massage the scalp gently with fingertips rather than nails. Use a medicated shampoo exactly as its instructions state, including any required time on the scalp. Avoid scraping attached scale or applying strong oils and fragranced products to broken skin. If the scalp is painful, plaques are thick, or hair is shedding in patches, arrange a dermatology review instead of repeatedly changing products.

Seek assessment for bleeding, pus, marked swelling, painful crusts, rapidly spreading redness, or patchy hair loss. A child with a scaly scalp and broken hairs should be seen because scalp ringworm may need prescription treatment. Ongoing flaking that does not respond to directed care also warrants a diagnosis.

Ask which cause best fits the scale, whether the scalp needs examination or testing, and how long to use medicated shampoo. Discuss whether hair products, eczema, psoriasis, or contact irritation could be contributing.
