Can you get stomach flu in summer?
Updated

Short answer
Stomach flu can occur in summer because gastroenteritis spreads year-round through infections, food, water and close contact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Season
- Gastroenteritis can happen throughout the year.
- Summer concern
- Heat, sweating and diarrhoea can combine to cause fluid loss.
- Prevention
- Chill food safely, wash hands and clean shared surfaces.
Why summer can feel different
Heat does not turn every episode of vomiting or diarrhoea into gastroenteritis, but warm weather can make food spoil more easily when it is stored or transported poorly. Travel, shared meals, swimming settings and close gatherings can also increase exposure to infectious particles. Heat and sweating add fluid loss, so dehydration may develop alongside stomach symptoms. Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever and loss of appetite can occur with gastroenteritis, but symptoms alone cannot identify the exact cause.
Practical summer care
Drink small amounts frequently and consider an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or diarrhoea continues. Keep food chilled, cook it thoroughly, wash produce, and avoid food that has been left in heat or handled by someone who is ill. Wash hands with soap and water, clean shared bathroom surfaces, and rest in a cool place. Do not prepare food for others while symptomatic.
When to seek help
Contact a clinician if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate very little, feel faint or confused, or become unusually sleepy. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, breathing difficulty, or signs of serious dehydration. Get earlier advice for a young child, older adult, pregnant person or anyone with a significant medical condition, especially during hot weather.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether heat exposure, food, travel or infection best fits the pattern, how to replace fluids, and when it is safe to return to work or school. Mention fever, urine changes, recent meals, travel, sick contacts and all medicines you take.
