What should you know about stomach bug temperature?

Gastroenteritis may cause fever as the immune system responds to infection. A person may also feel hot, cold or shivery without having a measured fever. Check temperature with a reliable thermometer and consider the whole illness: vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, alertness, drinking and urination. Temperature alone cannot show whether the cause is viral, bacterial or something outside the digestive tract.

Encourage regular sips of fluid and allow rest. Dress lightly and keep the room comfortable; avoid trying to cool the body aggressively. Use fever medicine only as directed for the person’s age and health, and check with a pharmacist if vomiting, dehydration, pregnancy or chronic illness is involved. Record the temperature, timing of symptoms and any medicine taken so changes are easier to explain.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, a stiff neck, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to drink. Contact a clinician when fever is persistent or concerning, vomiting continues, urine becomes very infrequent, or the person is a young child, older adult, pregnant or medically vulnerable. A fever with symptoms that do not fit a simple stomach illness also deserves review.
