What should you know about stomach bug going round?

Several people becoming unwell around the same time may reflect a contagious virus, shared food or another exposure. Gastroenteritis commonly presents with vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, cramps, fever and reduced appetite. Diarrhoea is a common presentation of the condition, but having diarrhoea does not establish its cause. Rotavirus infection can affect children and spread in households. The exact explanation may need clinical assessment, especially when symptoms are severe or unusual.

Stay home while vomiting or diarrhoea is active and follow workplace, school or childcare advice about returning. Wash hands with soap and water; alcohol hand gel may not remove every stomach virus. Clean toilet surfaces, launder soiled clothing separately and avoid sharing utensils. Drink frequent small sips and resume food gradually. Do not prepare food for others while ill. Keep children supervised for signs that they are drinking and urinating normally.

Seek prompt medical advice when fluids cannot stay down, symptoms keep worsening, or urine becomes much less frequent. Urgent assessment is needed for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in stool, intense abdominal pain or a very sleepy child. Dehydration is a particular concern for babies, older adults and people with chronic illness. A fever with a stiff neck, breathing difficulty or a rapidly deteriorating condition also needs urgent help.

Ask how long to stay away from work or school, whether household contacts need specific precautions, which fluids to use, and whether testing or treatment is needed.
