What should you know about stomach bug from pool?

Pool water can carry germs when sanitation is inadequate or when a swimmer has recently been ill. Swallowing even a small amount may irritate the digestive tract. Gastroenteritis can cause watery stools, vomiting, cramps, nausea, reduced appetite and sometimes fever. A symptom such as diarrhoea is a common presentation of gastroenteritis, but it does not by itself identify the cause. Rotavirus infection is one possible infectious explanation, particularly in young children.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially after vomiting or loose stools. Continue light foods when appetite returns; avoid forcing meals. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food, and do not share towels. Stay out of pools while diarrhoea or vomiting continues and follow local pool guidance before returning. Keep track of fluids, urine and symptoms so a clinician can assess the course.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, do not begin to settle, or you cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, trouble breathing or a child who is unusually sleepy. These can signal significant dehydration or another condition needing prompt assessment. Babies, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may need advice sooner.
