Can a stomach bug spread through the air?

Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and bowel, commonly causing nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and loss of appetite. It is often transmitted when tiny particles from stool or vomit contaminate hands, food, water, toilets, or shared objects. Vomiting can also disperse infectious droplets onto nearby surfaces or into the surrounding area. Rotavirus infection is one possible cause, particularly in children. The illness is not usually spread like a respiratory infection simply by sharing the same room without contamination.

Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet, cleaning vomit, or helping someone who is ill, and before preparing food. Clean contaminated bathroom and kitchen surfaces promptly, wash soiled laundry separately, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Sip oral rehydration fluid or other suitable drinks regularly if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Rest and return to food gradually as appetite improves.

Get medical advice for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, dry mouth, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek urgent care for blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or a concerning fever. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with serious medical conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask how to replace fluids, when it is safe to return to work or school, and whether testing is needed after travel, an outbreak, persistent symptoms, or blood in stool. Mention recent medicines and any vulnerable household members.
