What should you know about Steri-Strips for stitches?

Steri-Strips are narrow adhesive strips placed across a wound or beside stitches. They can reduce pulling on the skin edges and provide extra support as the surface heals. They do not replace stitches, close a deep wound by themselves, or indicate that the stitches are ready to come out.

The strips may curl at the edges or loosen as the dressing gets older. That does not always mean the wound has opened. Look instead at whether the skin edges remain together and whether there is increasing redness, swelling, drainage, or pain.

Follow the wound instructions you were given. Wash your hands before touching the area, keep the strips dry during the period advised by your clinician, and avoid rubbing, picking, or pulling them away. Pat nearby skin dry after washing rather than dragging a towel over the strips.

Keep activities that stretch or strike the wound to a minimum. Do not apply creams, oils, or household adhesives over the strips unless a healthcare professional has recommended them. If a strip falls off early, do not tug at the remaining strips; contact the treating service for specific advice.

Arrange prompt medical advice if the wound edges separate, bleeding does not settle with gentle pressure, or a stitch becomes buried, very tight, or unexpectedly loose. Contact a clinician if pain, warmth, swelling, redness, or cloudy drainage is increasing rather than easing.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, severe worsening pain, fever with feeling unwell, or loss of movement or sensation near the wound. Wound care and dressing advice can help you understand routine protection while the area heals.

Ask how long the Steri-Strips and stitches should remain, whether you may shower or cover them, and what to do if an edge lifts. Also ask whether the wound location changes your activity limits and whether your tetanus vaccination needs checking after the original injury.
